Ilesa rally shooting: Police release Osun commissioner after questioning

The Osun State Police Command has released the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, who was arrested following Saturday’s shooting at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ilesa.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that Adejoorin was released on bail, while investigations into the incident continued.

However, speaking after his release in a video circulated online, Adejoorin gave an account of how he was arrested, saying he had travelled to Ilesa with his driver and an Amotekun personnel attached to his office.

“When I was about reaching where I was going, I saw that the driver had gone past where I was going and I wanted to turn back. When he turned, I saw a jeep, I saw one Wemimo and two other policemen and their driver, and they blocked my vehicle that we cannot go,” he said.

According to the commissioner, Wemimo later questioned him about the presence of the Amotekun personnel in his vehicle.

“I told him Amotekun is in the state and that he is attached to my office. We had police officers and NSCDC personnel before, but they were withdrawn from us by the powers that be in this country.

“They searched my bag and car; they didn’t find anything. They asked me and the Amotekun personnel to enter their vehicle and for my driver to drive my car behind them,” he added.

Adejoorin alleged that they were driven around Ilesa for about 40 minutes before being taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where he said they were detained and asked to write statements.

The commissioner said his driver was released on Saturday, while he was released on Sunday, but the Amotekun personnel remained in custody.
