I’ll consult widely before taking decision on 2027-Jonathan tells youths
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to growing calls by some Nigerian youths urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying he has taken note of the appeals and would consult widely before making any political decision.
Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday at his office in Abuja while receiving youth groups who visited him to press for his return to frontline politics ahead of the next general election.
The former president acknowledged the concerns and expectations expressed by the youths but stopped short of making any commitment.
According to him, any major political decision must be carefully considered after broad consultations with relevant stakeholders.
He urged young Nigerians to continue advocating for peaceful, transparent, and credible elections, stressing that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in the electoral process.
Speaking further, Jonathan expressed concern over declining voter turnout in the country, describing voter apathy as one of the biggest threats facing Nigeria’s democratic development in recent years.
“Nigeria has one of the highest levels of voter apathy in all the elections I have observed globally,” the former president said, while calling for increased civic awareness and public participation in governance.
Jonathan urged Nigerian youths to become more involved in civic engagement and political activities rather than remaining passive observers.
