Iquaibom confident of medal haul for Nigeria at African Weightlifting Championship

A member of the Technical Committee of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA), Lawrence Iquaibom, has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s weightlifters will excel at the ongoing African Weightlifting Championship in Moka, Mauritius.

The recently re-elected WFA Technical Committee member affirmed that the country’s lifters had top-notch preparation for the championship. Based on their previous performances, he expects Nigeria to finish among the top two teams by the end of the competition on Sunday.

“I can confirm that they are ready for the competition. I know they will live up to expectations because if we don’t finish first, we will end up second in Africa,” Iquaibom told NWF Media from Mauritius.

“We are going to win plenty of medals because three medals are awarded in each category. I believe all our lifters will return to Nigeria with medals.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s weightlifters will begin their medal chase on Thursday, with four of the six athletes expected to compete.

The opening ceremony was held on Wednesday, with participating countries showcasing their lifters and officials to officially kick off the championship.

The competition began Wednesday evening with the Women’s 45kg and 49kg categories.

Nigeria’s medal quest begins at 13:00 local time on Day 2 of the championship, with Onome Omolola Didih competing in the women’s 55kg category.
