NSC DG encourages Nigerian weightlifters with cash support in Mauritius

Nigeria’s contingent at the 2025 African Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius has received a significant financial boost, as the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, personally donated $3,800 to athletes and officials of the team.

The DG, currently in Moka, Mauritius to support and motivate the team, made the donation during a meeting with athletes and officials of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation on Wednesday.

“I bring you greetings from the Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who is the father of sports in Nigeria,” Olopade began.

“He asked me to remind you that weightlifting is one of the sports in which Nigeria holds a competitive edge both in Africa and globally, so you must strive to win as many medals as possible here in Mauritius.”

He added: “My slogan for you here in Mauritius is: more gold, more money. As you win, your alerts follow.”

Olopade further announced that four athletes have been shortlisted into Category A of the Elite Programme under the Elite Athletes and Podium Performance Board of the Commission. Each will receive $20,000 annually as training grants, starting with an initial $5,000 installment disbursed next week.

“Your welfare is very important to us. It’s a core mandate of the Commission under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to prioritize the well-being of our elite athletes,” he said.

“With this support, you can now focus on preparing without distractions for the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, and ultimately, the Olympic Games,” Olopade concluded.
