Kingmakers write Makinde over alleged interference in Onipako selection
By Adejayan Gbenga –
The kingmakers of Pako community in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State have formally protested against the alleged unfair interference of their Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sola Adeleke, in the selection of the new Onipako of Pako.
Through their legal counsel, Kunle Sobaloju (SAN), the kingmakers addressed a letter to Governor Seyi Makinde, the Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo.
They expressed concern over what they described as continuous intimidation and obstruction in the final selection process, allegedly instigated by Chief Moyo Ajibode (Jagun of Pako) with the support of the Local Government Chairman.
The letter stated that, despite multiple government directives dating back to 2022 instructing the kingmakers to select a new Onipako from two eligible ruling houses, the final selection process has been repeatedly disrupted.
During a meeting in March 2024, ten out of thirteen chiefs voted for Prince Wahab Olasunkanmi Shittu, but the process was allegedly undermined by intimidation and interference from Chief Ajibode. Subsequent attempts to finalise the appointment at the Local Government premises in August and December 2025 were similarly disrupted, the kingmakers claimed.
The kingmakers appealed to the Governor and relevant authorities to intervene, stressing that the Chairman’s actions violate the customs and traditions of Pako and threaten the community’s peace.
They requested that Prince Wahab Olasunkanmi Shittu be officially approved as the new Onipako, in accordance with traditional procedures and the collective decision of the kingmakers.
At the time of reporting, efforts to reach Chairman Adeleke for a response were unsuccessful.
