Kwankwaso, Peter Obi to join NDC amid ADC leadership crisis

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, is set to defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week, according to the Kwankwasiyya movement.

According to a report by TheCable newspaper, Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson of the movement, confirmed the development on Friday night, saying the decision followed a unanimous endorsement by stakeholders.

Mohammed said discussions with the NDC are “about 90 percent” complete, adding that Kwankwaso, alongside Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and other political actors, are expected to formally join the NDC on Monday or Tuesday.

“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” he said.

According to him, representatives from all 44 local government areas in Kano met at Kwankwaso’s residence on Friday and unanimously approved the move.

“The stakeholders have unanimously given him the go-ahead to move to the NDC,” Mohammed said, adding that Kwankwaso is currently in Kano and is expected in Abuja ahead of the defection.

He said the decision was influenced by ongoing leadership disputes within the ADC, which were recently affected by a Supreme Court ruling that returned the matter to the Federal High Court for determination.

Mohammed said the legal uncertainty, alongside pending cases and INEC’s deadline for submission of party membership registers, made staying in the ADC “unfeasible.”
