As the world prepares to bid farewell to 2024, it is essential to reflect on the notable events that defined the year. In Kwara State, the year was marked by unforeseen occurrences—some pleasant, others tragic.

Below is a chronicle of significant events in Kwara for 2024, as examined by Western Post’s Kwara State Correspondent.

March

The year began with tension on March 8 when an inmate at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre, Ilorin, seized a warder’s rifle and shot a roadside vulcanizer near the facility.

The victim, shot in the stomach, was rushed to a hospital, while the inmate was detained at the ‘C’ Division Police Station in Isale-Ojo. The incident, which occurred at 8 a.m., caused panic in the area as residents scrambled for safety.

Death of Senator Rafiu Ibrahim: Former banker and Eighth National Assembly Senator, Dr. Rafiu Ibrahim, passed away in April, sending shockwaves across social media.

Kwara Deputy Governor Mourns Mother: Deputy Governor Mr. Kayode Alabi lost his mother, Mama Ena Maud Alabi (née Aljoe), on April 5 at the age of 98. A retired senior matron, Mama Ena’s passing marked the end of a life dedicated to healthcare and humanity.

Saraki Loses Mother: Former Kwara State Governor, Sen. Bukola Saraki, mourned the loss of his mother, Chief Mrs. Florence Morenike Saraki, who passed away at 89.

Patigi Boat Mishap: A devastating boat accident in Patigi claimed 106 lives, mainly wedding guests from Egbu village. Local authorities confirmed 144 survivors.

Demolition and Setback Reclamation: The Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KWAGIS) carried out demolitions to reclaim setbacks and improve urban aesthetics. Areas affected included Post Office, Taiwo Road, and Ahmadu Bello Way. This action sparked mixed reactions from residents.

August

Murder of Awesu Mojisola: The lifeless body of Awesu Mojisola, a student of Kwara State College of Health Technology, was found at a dumpsite in Ilorin. Police investigations revealed she had been missing since August 9.

Drought: Farmers in Kwara suffered from months of drought, raising fears of food shortages. The situation prompted special prayers across religious groups.

Offa Robbery Judgment: The State High Court convicted five criminals for the infamous April 26, 2018, armed robbery in Offa, which claimed 33 lives.

Death of Abdulqoyyum Bamidele: Abdulqoyyum Bamidele, a ND2 student of Kwara Polytechnic, died under suspicious circumstances in GRA, Ilorin. The alleged involvement of three police officers led to their dismissal after investigations.

The long awaited local government areas election took place on September 21, the election which came five years into the administration of governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq saw the ruling All progressives Congress (APC) win all 16 local government areas in the state as well as all the wards councilorships.

Demolition of Crystal Corner Shops: KW-GIS demolished the Crystal Corner Shops in Ilorin for violating land use approvals. This sparked allegations of political undertones.

Kiama Boat Mishap: Another boat accident in Kiama Local Government Area during Maolud Nabbiy celebrations resulted in the loss of several lives.

Corps Member Assaulted: A female NYSC member in Ilorin was reportedly molested by teachers for not greeting them properly. The incident drew widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.

Fire Outbreak: On December 3, a tragic fire outbreak at Ile Bilewu, Ita-Amodu, Ilorin, destroyed 47 rooms and 19 shops after a lorry carrying mattresses collided with a high-tension wire.
