Lagos hands LASUCOM upgraded IDH Yaba facility

The Lagos State Government has handed over an upgraded facility at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Yaba, to the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) for use by its Faculty of Pharmacy.

The handover, held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, came exactly one year after a state delegation inspected the facility as part of plans to expand LASUCOM through satellite campuses in Yaba and Gbagada.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said the upgraded facility would boost the state’s capacity to train more healthcare professionals and help address manpower shortages in the health sector.

Abayomi said the shortage had been worsened by the “Japa syndrome” and the low production of health professionals, adding that the government was implementing measures to expand training capacity while encouraging skilled Nigerians abroad to return home.

He commended the Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA) and the contractor for completing the project in line with government standards.

LASUCOM Provost, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, described the handover as a major milestone for the institution, saying the facility would expand the College’s capacity for pharmacy education and provide students with an improved learning environment.

The College is expected to integrate its Faculty of Pharmacy into the Yaba facility, while construction continues on the planned Gbagada satellite campus.
