Lagos Island regeneration to tackle floods, improve living conditions – LASG
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed that the ongoing Lagos Island regeneration and beautification projects will add significant value to the area and the state as a whole.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, made this known on Sunday after inspecting the Adeniji-Adele underbridge by Oja Oba through Aroloya and the underbridge behind Ebute Ero Police Station. He said the projects are designed to enhance drainage capacity, reduce flood risks and improve residents’ quality of life.
Wahab noted that the regeneration, when completed, would address perennial flooding challenges across Lagos Island and its environs. He added that environmental conditions have improved since work began, with residents now able to move around more easily.
According to him, the visit also formalised plans to beautify the Oja Oba underbridge through a public-private partnership and corporate social responsibility arrangement. He said interested parties had submitted design proposals, which are being reviewed to ensure they align with state standards.
The commissioner disclosed that one proponent has also chosen to beautify the Idumota underbridge, which was cleared of traders last year. Plans for the site include sporting facilities, public toilets and green areas, subject to final approval of the designs.
He stated that similar upgrades are ongoing at other locations, including Obalende and Ijora underbridges, adding that most aspects of the Lagos Island regeneration are progressing according to plan despite minor delays around Ojo Giwa Street.
Wahab explained that contractors are using precast materials and may slightly adjust designs in some narrow sections to meet required standards. He said the projects would be delivered in phases, ranging from six to 14 months, and appealed to residents for patience over temporary inconveniences. “I would like to appeal to residents to be patient. You can never make an omelette without breaking the egg. There will be a bit of inconvenience. Like a woman in labour,” he said
On environmental sanitation, Wahab said a declaration on monthly sanitation and waste management would be made in a few weeks. He urged residents to cultivate regular cleaning habits, warning that the government would intensify enforcement against illegal waste disposal, particularly by markets along major roads such as the Badagry Expressway.
