Lagos, Ondo lead other South West states as most expensive journey by motorcycle

A report by National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) has revealed that Lagos and Ondo led other South West states as the most expensive journey by motorcycle or Okada per drop.
According to the report, the average highest price for motorcycle in Lagos stood at N855.67 per drop in June 2024, while in Ondo, N708.33 per drop.
The bureau “transport fare watch” for June 2024, revealed that average highest price for motorcycle in Ekiti, N336.67; Ogun, N435.35; Osun, N375.55; Oyo, N535.55 and Kwara, N455.56 per drop.
Transport Fare Watch for June 2024 covers the following categories: bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity (state route) charge per person; air fare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motor-cycle (Okada) per drop; and water way passenger transport.
On state profile analysis, the report disclosed that, “for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with N9,450.67 followed by Gombe with N8,283.33. The least fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,510.00, followed by Ebonyi with N5,543.33.
“Taraba state recorded the highest bus journey within the city (per drop constant route) in June 2024 with N1,451.67 followed by Ondo with N1,206.67.
“On the other hand, Abia recorded the least with N500.70, followed by Adamawa with N590.00. Similarly, Rivers recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journeys) with N97,500.00, followed by Kano with N96,433.33.
“Conversely, Plateau recorded the least fare with N80,166.67, followed by Abuja with N82,500.00. Also, Lagos State had the highest motorcycle transport fare in June 2024 with N855.67, followed by Ondo with N708.33.
“Anambra recorded the least fare with N282.12, followed by Bayelsa with N285.98. Similarly, water transport fare was highest in Bayelsa with N4,550.21, followed by Delta with N4,255.98, while the least fare was recorded in Borno with N445.76, followed by Gombe with N565.67.
“For Analysis by zone in June 2024, transport fares of bus journeys within the city recorded the highest in the South- West with N992.62, followed by the South-South with N985.55, while the South-East recorded the least with N911.72.
“In terms of bus journey intercity, the South-South had the highest fare with N7,604.90 followed by the South-East with N7,238.93, while North-Central recorded the least with N6,797.25.
“Air transportation in June 2024, the North-West recorded the highest fare with N92,262.00, followed by the South-West with N92,135.28. while the North-Central had the least with N85,047.73.
“Also, commuters on a motorcycle (Okada) paid the highest fare in the South-West with N541.19 and North-East with N509.35, while the North-West recorded the least with N430.08.
“The South -South zone had the highest fare on water transport with N3,582.30, followed by the South-West with N1,365.88, while the North-East had the least with N785.72.”
According to the report, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop declined by 1.28per cent from N976.08 in May 2024 to N963.58 in June 2024.
“On a year-on year basis, it decreased by 26.23% from N1,306.22 in June 2023,” it said.
In another category, NBS in its report noted that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop was N7,029.23 in June 2024, indicating a decline of 0.52per cent on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,129.46 in May 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 24.72per cent from N5,686.49 in June 2023.
“In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey was N89,886.84 in June 2024, showing an increase of 0.51% while compared to previous month (May 2024). On a year-on -year basis, the fare rose by 14.18% from N78,721.62 in June 2023.
“The average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was N477.49 in June 2024 which shows an increase of 0.84per cent when compared with the value recorded in May 2024 (N473.51). On a year-on-year basis, the fare decreased by 22.80per cent when compared with June 2023 (N618.52).
“For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in June 2024 was N1,409.33 which indi-cates an increase of 1.69per cent when compared to the previous month (May 2024). On a year-on-year basis, it increased by 3.16per cent from N1,366.22 in June 2023.”
