LASG charges driving school operators on quality drivers’ education

By Adeola Ogunrinde –

The Lagos State Government has called on driving school operators in the state to deliver qualitative driver’s education as part of efforts to address challenges in the public transportation sector.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, gave the charge at the 2025 Train-the-Trainer Workshop organised by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) for driving school operators and instructors. The workshop, themed “Drivers’ Education: Panacea to Economic Growth and Development,” was held at the STO Resource Centre, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja.

Mr. Osiyemi noted that Lagos, with over 20 million residents and nearly six million registered vehicles, records more than 15 million daily motorised trips. He stressed that if this volume of movement is not managed by competent drivers, it could result in traffic paralysis, public health crises, and loss of productivity.

He added that when properly regulated, the state’s transport ecosystem would continue to drive economic growth, not only for Lagos, but also for Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

The Commissioner explained that the workshop was a strategic initiative aligned with both global objectives and the developmental agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration. He emphasised its connection to the United Nations Decade of Action on road safety, which underscores quality driver’s education as a critical factor in reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities.

Mr. Osiyemi commended LASDRI for its continuous innovations in service delivery, including the introduction of a computer-based recertification test, harmonised three-window training, data-driven training processes, and the annual Ember Months road safety campaign.

He urged driving school operators to support government’s vision by ensuring their training programmes produce disciplined, competent, and safety-conscious drivers.

In her welcome address, the General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Tiamiyu Afusat, said the workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to deliberate on government policies and issues affecting the transport sector, with a view to improving service delivery across the state.
