Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other state officials on Wednesday laid wreaths in honor of Nigeria’s fallen heroes, reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting their families.

The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, made this statement at the parade and wreath-laying ceremony commemorating the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the TBS Square Arcade, Lagos.

In addition to the wreath-laying, the ceremony featured a parade by the Nigerian Armed Forces, the release of pigeons symbolizing peace and freedom, and a 21-gun salute.

Speaking after the ceremony, Dr. Hamzat emphasized that the event marked the culmination of the emblem launch and donation drive initiated by President Bola Tinubu.

He said, “Every year, we honor our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation. It is a privilege to remember them, and we pray for their souls. This ceremony is the culmination of a movement launched by the President to recognize their sacrifices.”

Hamzat further called on Nigerians to support the families of the fallen heroes, stating, “These heroes left behind families and loved ones. It is our collective responsibility to assist their children and support their welfare. This is not just about the parade; it’s about ensuring their legacy is sustained.”

He added, “We hope Nigerians will continue to contribute to this cause to help sustain the families of our fallen heroes. The essence of this ceremony is to honor them and remind everyone that they will never be forgotten.”

Hamzat also highlighted the Lagos State Government’s ongoing support for veterans, saying, “The legion comprises our veterans, and every year we engage with them. About two weeks ago, they visited the Secretariat, and we provided support. We work with them throughout the year, often without public attention.”

He concluded, “This support includes employment opportunities, education for their children, and various welfare initiatives. While we continue to listen and improve, our commitment is to sustain their families and ensure they feel supported.”
