LASG rolls out tough sanctions for illegal land reclamation

The Lagos State Government has introduced a stringent policy that mandates the forfeiture of illegally reclaimed land and imposes heavy fines on offenders, as part of efforts to protect coastal and waterfront ecosystems.
The directive, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was announced by Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon. Dayo Bush Alebiosu, during an appearance on TVC’s Your View ahead of the 2025 World Oceans Day.
Alebiosu stated that any unauthorized land reclamation, especially those narrowing or encroaching on waterways, would lead to the forfeiture of half the land to the state and fines calculated at current market value. He noted that the Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and the eGIS Office to deploy technology for real-time monitoring of illegal activities such as dredging and reclamation.
The Commissioner emphasized the significance of the Lagos Lagoon, calling it a vital part of the state’s ecosystem. “We live on the lagoon. It feeds us with seafood and fresh water. But illegal dredging and dumping are harming it. When we disturb nature, it pushes back.”
He warned that enforcement has been ramped up, with regular patrols by land and sea. “Some still challenge government authority, but we are not relenting. Since I became Commissioner, enforcement has been continuous.”
Alebiosu highlighted the environmental damage caused by human interference, explaining how disrupting aquatic ecosystems displaces microorganisms that support fish populations, leading to lower yields and rising food costs.
Beyond penalties, he stressed the need to change public attitudes. “Laws may not change hearts, but they can shape habits. That’s why enforcement is backed by advocacy and grassroots engagement.”
He assured Lagosians of the government’s readiness, declaring: “Our boats are ready, our vehicles are on the road, and more are coming. With the 2025 World Oceans Day theme on sustainability, we are leading by example. The era of impunity on our waterways is over.”
