LAWMA cracks down on illegal dumping, arrests suspect in dawn raid on Lagos Island
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has seized several waste carts and arrested a suspect during an early-morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island, as part of intensified efforts to curb illegal waste disposal.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Lagos State Government said LAWMA officials intercepted the carts in the Isale-Eko area during a coordinated exercise aimed at halting unregulated waste movement and preventing the resurgence of illegal dump sites in previously cleared locations.
The operation, carried out at dawn, followed targeted surveillance of suspected unauthorised dumping activities in the area.
A 42-year-old suspect, Muritala Suleiman, from Zamfara State, was arrested at about 1:31 a.m. for allegedly dumping refuse illegally at Tinubu Square on Lagos Island.
LAWMA noted that early-morning surveillance remains a key component of its enforcement strategy, as illegal dumping often occurs under the cover of darkness.
Commenting on the exercise, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the sustained enforcement drive is designed to deter offenders and safeguard rehabilitated sites.
“Our Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement operatives are strategically deployed across the state to eliminate persistent black spots and ensure environmental sustainability along major corridors,” he said.
LAWMA urged residents to patronise approved waste disposal channels and support ongoing efforts to maintain a clean, safe and environmentally responsible Lagos.
