Elemona: Prominent lawyer alleges threat to his life

A branch chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), N.D. Abdulsalam, has alleged that his life is under threat following a formal complaint he made against Lieutenant Colonel Nurudeen Yusuf, the Aide-de-Camp to President Bola Tinubu and Elemona of Ilemona.
Abdulsalam, the founding partner of Lawgem LP, said he had faced persistent harassment and threats since submitting a protest letter accusing Yusuf of abuse of power, land grabbing and misuse of state security apparatus.
In a statement dated November 3, 2026, and issued in Abuja, the lawyer said he had received suspicious phone calls from individuals allegedly attempting to lure him to undisclosed locations under the guise of arranging legal consultations. He added that at about 11:55 a.m. on Tuesday, a caller claiming to be an officer at the Kwara State Police Headquarters contacted him, purportedly acting on the instructions of the state commissioner of police.
According to Abdulsalam, the caller said a police team had arrived in Abuja and was stationed at the Gwagwalada Police Division for investigative activities, insisting that he report immediately. He alleged that about 10 officers had been deployed from Kwara State to arrest him, with the FCT commissioner of police allegedly directed to assist in his apprehension.
The NBA chairman said he told the officers that any request for his appearance should be communicated through a formal invitation rather than the deployment of security personnel across state lines. He maintained that he had neither fled nor gone into hiding.
Abdulsalam described the alleged deployment as an inappropriate use of public resources and police personnel to pursue what he characterised as a private dispute involving Yusuf. He cited the reported detention of a local resident, Suwara Agindingbadi, and the alleged assault on Offa youths, including Kamal Lawal and Taye Lateef, over land disputes as further examples of the alleged misuse of state machinery.
He also alleged that Agindingbadi remained in custody on fabricated charges and claimed that the courts had failed to address the alleged assault effectively.
Abdulsalam vowed to continue speaking out against what he described as abuses of power and to demand accountability. “I will not be cowed by gunboat tactics or the unconstitutional misuse of executive power. Power is transient. I remain resolute in speaking truth to power and demanding justice,” he said.
