Lecturers shut down LAUTECH medical school over unpaid arrears

Adejayan Gbenga –
Academic activities have been suspended at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Medical School, following an indefinite strike by lecturers under the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), LAUTECH Chapter.
The strike, which began on Friday, was confirmed in a letter addressed to the vice chancellor and signed by the acting chairman, Professor M.A. Olamoyegun, and acting secretary, Dr A.O. Alabi.
The lecturers are demanding the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and payment of arrears dating back to January 2025. According to NAMDA, the university has failed to act despite several appeals, a 14-day ultimatum, and ongoing dialogue.
The association described the payment of July salaries without reflecting the agreed CONMESS structure as a sign of the administration’s indifference to their concerns.
“As a result, all teaching activities—including lectures, ward rounds, tutorials, exams, student supervision, and committee assignments—across the Basic Medical, Basic Clinical, and Clinical Sciences faculties are hereby suspended,” the letter stated.
NAMDA clarified that the strike does not affect services at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, stressing that their demands are specific to their academic roles within the university, not clinical duties.
The association expressed disappointment over what it called persistent neglect by the management, saying it had exhausted all avenues for a peaceful resolution.
In response, the union have withdrawn all academic services and vowed to maintain the action until their demands are fully met.
