Mbah raises ESUT monthly subvention by N115m, urges ASUU to suspend strike
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has approved an additional N115 million monthly subvention for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) as part of efforts to resolve the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ESUT chapter.
The additional funding will increase the state government’s monthly subvention to the university from N161 million to N276 million, bringing the total increase in government support since February 2026 to N140 million.
The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the intervention was aimed at strengthening ESUT’s ability to meet its financial obligations to staff and sustain quality academic services.
Onyia explained that before February 2026, the state government provided N136 million monthly to ESUT. The government later added N25 million monthly for the university’s College of Medicine to support the payment of 120 additional staff, bringing the total monthly subvention to N161 million.
He said the latest N115 million increase would further strengthen the university’s capacity to meet its financial obligations and support the implementation of the salary agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.
“This additional N115 million monthly intervention is a substantial commitment of public resources aimed at strengthening ESUT and ensuring that the institution can meet its obligations to its staff and students,” Onyia said.
The SSG appealed to ASUU members at ESUT to reciprocate the government’s intervention by suspending the strike and returning to academic activities while outstanding issues are resolved through dialogue.
He urged the university management, ASUU and other stakeholders to work together to restore the academic calendar, stressing that students should not bear the consequences of disputes that could be resolved amicably.
