Nanahfatimah Foundation launches in Lagos, targets Cancer research, student support

- Secures ₦10 million to kick-start foundation’s activities
Kunle Sanni –
The Nanahfatimah Amele Bamigbetan Oncology Foundation (NABOF) was officially launched on Monday at the Lagos State College of Medicine, Ikeja, with a strong commitment to advancing cancer research, education, and policy collaboration in Nigeria.
Established in memory of the late wife of former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Kehinde Bamigbetan, the foundation aims to support oncology students, fund cutting-edge cancer research, and foster strategic partnerships between scientists and policymakers.
Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Omolara Fatiregun, a leading clinical oncologist, described the foundation as a crucial initiative that seeks to bridge the gap between medical science and public policy in addressing Nigeria’s growing cancer burden.
“There is an urgent need to connect policymakers and scientists. This foundation is a call to action,” Fatiregun said. “We are inviting institutions and donors to invest in this initiative to transform cancer care in Nigeria.”
She noted that the foundation would collaborate with both local and international academic institutions to offer scholarships and fund oncology-focused research for medical students. Fatiregun also expressed optimism that with increased investment, Nigeria could move toward more advanced and non-invasive cancer treatments.
Felicia Sonubi, Managing Director of Africa Emerging Trustees—the firm managing the foundation—commended the initiative and assured stakeholders that a sound governance and financial management structure had been established to ensure sustainability.
Hon. Kehinde Bamigbetan revealed that an initial ₦10 million had been secured to kick-start the foundation’s activities. He called on individuals, corporate organisations, and government bodies to support its mission.
“One way to fight this disease is by investing in research and building a robust knowledge base, and that’s exactly what this foundation aims to do,” he said.
