NDPC launches National Privacy Week 2025, unveils Annual Report, Data Protection Journal

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has officially launched the National Privacy Week 2025, coinciding with Global Privacy Day.

The week-long event, aimed at reinforcing data privacy awareness and regulatory advancements, commenced with a press conference led by the National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji.

Delivering a welcome address and ecosystem briefing, Dr. Olatunji highlighted the Commission’s key achievements since the previous Data Privacy Day, emphasizing NDPC’s strides in strengthening data protection in Nigeria.

He noted that the Commission, guided by its strategic roadmap, has gained global recognition, positioning Nigeria as a leading force in Africa’s data protection landscape.

He stressed the importance of cooperation, collaboration, human capacity development, and public awareness in fostering a strong data privacy culture. Reinforcing NDPC’s commitment to job creation, he aligned the Commission’s initiatives with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in empowering Nigerian youth.

A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of the National Certification Program for Data Protection Officers, an initiative designed to certify Data Protection Officers (DPOs) locally.

Dr. Olatunji projected that the program could generate over 500,000 jobs within the country’s data protection and privacy ecosystem. He further urged stakeholders to enhance public awareness and collaborate in safeguarding personal data and privacy rights.

As part of the Privacy Week activities, the NDPC also launched its Annual Report and the maiden edition of the Journal on Data Protection and Privacy.

The Annual Report details the Commission’s milestones and accomplishments over the past year, while the Journal serves as a platform for researchers, academics, and industry experts to publish studies, findings, and innovations in data protection.

National Privacy Week 2025 is expected to feature a series of events, workshops, and stakeholder engagements aimed at deepening the understanding of data privacy and promoting compliance with Nigeria’s data protection regulations.
