NFF mourns former NRA President Tade Azeez

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed shock and deep sadness over the passing of former President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), Otunba Tade Azeez, who died on Friday, April 25, 2025, after a brief illness.

Azeez reportedly passed away around 2:45 p.m., leaving the football community in mourning.

Reacting to the news, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said:
“What? Are you serious? This is shocking; we didn’t even know he was sick. Another big loss to Nigerian football. Only a few days ago, we were mourning former FIFA referee Bosede Momoh. This is devastating.”

He described Azeez as a committed contributor to the development of Nigerian football, adding:
“We remember his contributions with fondness — marked by dedication, discipline, and diligence. May God grant him eternal rest and comfort to his family, friends, the refereeing community, and the entire football family.”

Aged 63, Azeez was known for his vibrant personality, people skills, and passion for the game. Even after his tenure as NRA President, he remained actively involved in football, serving as chairman of the ValueJet Cup, a premier off-season tournament.

A former top referee, Azeez spearheaded major reforms within the NRA, helping the association adapt to modern standards and technological advancements. He also played a significant role during the transformative era of Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi in the Lagos State Football Association, contributing to sustainable football development in the state.
