Nigeria, Australia launch training programme for mining professionals

Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has launched a two-week capacity enhancement programme for Nigerian mining professionals at Murdoch University, Australia. The training is part of a broader Nigeria–Australia collaboration aimed at bridging technical skill gaps in the mining sector and strengthening bilateral relations.

The initiative follows a bilateral agreement signed during the 2023 Africa Down Under (ADU) Conference in Perth between Nigeria’s Ministry of Solid Minerals and the Government of Western Australia, facilitated by the Australian Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and Murdoch University.

Supported by the Commonwealth Government and the Australian High Commission in Nigeria, the programme’s pilot phase features 11 Nigerian participants. The training covers extractive metallurgy, sustainable geochemistry, mineral science research, and includes field visits and engagement with mining industry experts.

Dr. Alake described the programme as a fulfilment of a vision conceived less than two years ago, crediting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Australian High Commissioner Leilani Bin-Juda for their strong backing. He praised Murdoch University for its warm reception and commitment to fostering mutually beneficial cooperation.

“This collaboration with a leading mining nation like Australia is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s mining sector,” Alake said. He urged participants to be worthy ambassadors and use the training to enhance technical capacity and contribute to policy development in the sector.

Murdoch University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Deeks, welcomed the Nigerian delegation, highlighting the university’s mission to promote global knowledge exchange and sustainable development. He emphasized that the training reflects a shared commitment to ethical and inclusive resource development.

Western Australia’s Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Hon. David Michael, also expressed support for the programme, affirming the value of joint efforts in building human capacity for responsible mineral development.

As part of the training, participants will also engage with the Australian Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety in a structured programme aimed at broadening their technical exposure and practical experience.
