Nigeria has joined fellow African Union (AU) member states in commemorating Africa Day 2025, marking 62 years since the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Sunday, reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to the principles of African unity, justice, and continental development.
This year’s theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy stance and its continued support for reparative justice, equality, and the empowerment of African peoples on the continent and in the diaspora.
The Ministry praised the African Union for serving as a strong platform to champion the aspirations of African nations, describing Africa Day as a powerful reminder of the continent’s shared struggles, heritage, and hopes for a peaceful, integrated, and economically vibrant future.
Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria reiterated its commitment to the AU’s Agenda 2063, with a strong focus on democracy, good governance, youth development, and regional security. The country also pledged ongoing support for initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), climate resilience efforts, and technological innovation.
“We commend the progress Africa has made in education, healthcare, and infrastructure,” the Ministry stated, while calling for deeper collaboration to overcome persistent challenges such as conflict, poverty, and inequality.
In marking this year’s celebration, Nigeria also called for stronger partnerships across Africa and with the global community to amplify the continent’s voice and influence on the world stage.
