Nigeria on path to recovery despite challenges, says information minister
The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the country remains stable, resilient, and on a clear path to economic recovery, despite ongoing security and economic challenges.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the remarks on Wednesday during the 81st General Assembly and 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) at Hawthorn Hotel and Suites, Abuja.
“The insinuation that Nigeria is on the brink is entirely misplaced. On the contrary, we are daily exhibiting resilience and tackling our security and economic challenges more decisively,” Idris said.
On security, the minister highlighted the progress made through coordinated military operations and improved intelligence, citing successful interventions in Zamfara and Niger States that neutralised bandits and thwarted planned attacks. “Incidents of large-scale insurgent control have significantly decreased, and we are strengthening intelligence and rapid response systems to protect lives and property,” he added.
Turning to the economy, Idris noted positive indicators, including rising foreign reserves, improved investor confidence, and expanding revenue streams from both oil and non-oil sectors. He also highlighted Nigeria’s recent reclassification as a Frontier Market by FTSE Russell, describing it as a strong signal of global confidence in the country’s financial system.
The minister urged broadcasters to report responsibly, especially with the 2027 elections approaching, stressing that the media plays a critical role in maintaining national unity and shaping public perception. “The airwaves are a public trust. Broadcasting must continue to inform, educate, and unite our people while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and accuracy,” he said.
Idris reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting a free and responsible media environment, calling for collaboration between government and media institutions to combat misinformation and promote cohesion. He commended BON for its role in enhancing professionalism in the broadcasting industry.
The event was attended by top officials, including the INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu, NTA Director-General, BON Chairman Comr. Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos, and other stakeholders from federal agencies and the media sector.
