Nigerian Army reaffirms commitment to security amid festivities

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, NAM, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering resolve to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity against all adversaries. The statement was made during the Eid-El-Kabir festivities held with troops of the 2 Division Nigerian Army at Major General JM Inienger Sports Complex, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.

Representing the COAS, the Corps Commander of the Nigerian Army Ordinance Corps, Major General HT Wesley, conveyed the Army Chief’s goodwill message to the troops. He commended the soldiers and their families for their invaluable sacrifices, gallantry, and courage in service to the nation. “Your unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and resilience in the service of our beloved country are deeply appreciated and honoured during this season of reflection and gratitude,” he said.

Lieutenant General Oluyede emphasized that Eid-El-Kabir is a festival that highlights the virtues of sacrifice and selfless service, urging the troops of 2 Division to renew their commitment in the ongoing fight against insecurity and to intensify efforts to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The COAS noted that the festive period provides an opportunity for the Army to assess both individual and collective efforts while expressing gratitude to God for life and the relative peace restored in many parts of the country. He praised the troops for their unwavering loyalty, uncommon courage, and faith, which have led to significant victories despite grave dangers. He also extended heartfelt condolences and honor to families of soldiers who were injured or lost their lives in the line of duty, stating, “The selfless heroism of your loved ones will forever be etched in the hearts of Nigerians and humanity.”

Expressing appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his steadfast support, leadership, and strategic guidance as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the COAS also thanked Nigerians for their continuous belief and support of the Army. He looked forward to stronger collaborations aimed at ending insecurity and fostering sustainable economic growth.

In his welcome address, Major General Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, thanked the COAS for the opportunity to celebrate Eid-El-Kabir together with the troops, emphasizing that the COAS’s presence highlights his dedication to the welfare and morale of Army personnel. “Your visionary leadership continues to inspire us, and your dedication to the well-being of troops fortifies our resolve to protect our nation,” he said.

General Onubogu described the Sallah meal not merely as a gathering, but as an occasion to strengthen bonds, foster comradeship, and reflect on the significance of Eid-El-Kabir—a time for greater sacrifice, renewed faith, and unity for future success. He acknowledged soldiers serving away from home and on the frontlines, as well as their families who support them through difficult times. He referred to the troops as the bedrock of Nigeria’s safety and the foundation that sustains freedom for all. The GOC urged the 2 Division troops to remain focused and committed to fulfilling the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandates, wishing them success in all endeavors.

The celebration concluded with Major General HT Wesley, the GOC, Principal Staff Officers of 2 Division, and other senior officers serving troops with sumptuous meals of their choice. The event ended with the presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph.
