Nigeria’s unity enduring, Tinubu says at Bode George’s birthday celebration

President Bola Tinubu has emphasised the enduring unity of Nigeria, stating that the bonds shared by citizens and political leaders far outweigh partisan differences.
The president’s remarks were delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, at the 80th birthday celebration and memoir launch of Chief Olabode George in Lagos on Friday.
Describing Chief George as a “distinguished Nigerian” and “accomplished public servant,” President Tinubu said the celebrant’s invitation reflected the “Lagos spirit” of shared history and humanity, despite long-standing political differences.
Tinubu noted that the event demonstrated Nigeria’s resilient unity, even amid heated political disagreements. “As politicians, we can shout and disagree. Still, the values that bind us together as members of the same household living in different rooms are more enduring and stronger than what divides us,” he said.
The president acknowledged that he and Chief George have stood on opposite political sides since 1999 but stressed that mutual respect has remained intact. He commended Chief George for offering valuable counsel on national issues since the beginning of his administration.
Tinubu also celebrated the elder statesman’s life journey, describing his 80 years as a testament to “divine grace and resilience.” He recalled with humour Chief George’s past vow to go into exile if he ever became President, adding that he hoped the celebrant’s presence at the event signified a change of heart.
The president praised Chief George’s newly launched memoir, which chronicles his early life in Lagos, his military career, his tenure as military governor of the old Ondo State, his leadership role at the Nigerian Ports Authority, and his involvement in party politics.
Tinubu further expressed confidence that the book would offer important lessons on leadership, governance, and military doctrine.
