Nigeria’s World Cup hopes on knife’s edge – Emenike weighs in

Not many Nigerians will be happy with his verdict, but former Super Eagles forward Emmanuel Emenike believes Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the next World Cup are uncertain.
The ex-Nigeria international, assessing the Super Eagles’ prospects of securing one of Africa’s World Cup slots, said qualification could go either way.
A poor run in the qualifying series has left Nigeria in a precarious position, and Emenike warned that this could cost the country a place in the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“I would say it’s 50-50. We’re in a very shaky situation,” he admitted, acknowledging the challenges facing the Super Eagles in their bid to qualify.
Regarding the newly appointed Super Eagles manager, Eric Sekou Chelle, Emenike expressed confidence in his abilities despite widespread criticism of his appointment.
Chelle, who was named Nigeria’s head coach in January, has faced scrutiny from fans and analysts questioning his credentials and the decision not to hire a local coach.
Emenike, a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner with Nigeria, believes Chelle has the potential to succeed. He argued that the Malian-born tactician possesses the drive and determination needed to excel in the role.
The former Nigerian international also pointed out that Chelle has a squad filled with talented players capable of turning things around.
“I think Chelle will do well because he has a lot to prove. The authorities overlooked many local coaches to appoint him, so I believe he has a lot to offer the country,” he stated.
“We have players who can win games. Osimhen is a fighter who can turn matches around. We also have Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and many more in the squad. With a little hard work and honesty among themselves, they can go far,” Emenike concluded.
