NRC decries attacks on Abuja–Kaduna trains, calls for community vigilance

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has condemned the rising attacks on train operations along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor by suspected vandals and criminal elements, warning that the incidents pose serious risks to passengers and railway infrastructure.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its public relations officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation said the corporation said the latest incident occurred around kilometre 177 of the corridor, where unidentified persons reportedly gathered along the track and pelted stones at a moving train, damaging the windscreen of the leading locomotive.

The NRC expressed concern that similar attacks had been recorded in multiple locations within the past two weeks, including Gidan Busa/Sarki Gora Village in Kakau District, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, among others.

According to the management, more than six such incidents have been reported along the corridor, worsening operational challenges for the corporation as it strives to provide essential transport services.

The corporation warned that the persistent attacks endanger lives, damage critical infrastructure, and amount to economic sabotage capable of disrupting national transportation and undermining government investments in the railway sector.

Despite the incidents, the NRC said train operations have continued with enhanced safety measures and strict vigilance by personnel to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely.

It also acknowledged the efforts of security operatives working with the corporation to secure railway corridors and protect passengers and assets.

The NRC added that it is collaborating with security agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen surveillance, identify perpetrators, and bring them to justice, while calling on residents to report suspicious activities and help safeguard railway infrastructure.
