Ogun partners with NFF to host key football matches, events

Ogun State, known as the Gateway State, has signed on as a strategic partner of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to host events, programmes, and activities aimed at strengthening the football economy. This aligns with Nigeria’s broader push to develop a vibrant sports sector in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Hope agenda.

The partnership was formalised in Abeokuta on Sunday following a courtesy visit by the President of the NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and his delegation to the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Celebrated for its serene environment and impressive sporting and social infrastructure, Ogun State has consistently hosted national team matches and major tournaments over the years, including fixtures during the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009. It has also served as a venue for Confederation of African Football (CAF) club competitions.

More recently, the state-of-the-art Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo—established by billionaire football investor and philanthropist Honourable Kunle Soname—has hosted matches featuring the Super Falcons and the U-17 girls’ team, the Flamingos.

With just days to the start of the 2025 National Sports Festival, which Ogun State is set to host, the NFF President announced that the state has been selected to host the upcoming international friendlies between the Super Falcons and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses.

The first of the two matches will be played at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on Saturday, 31st May, while the second will be held at the newly renovated MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Tuesday, 3rd June.

Additionally, Ogun State has been awarded hosting rights for the WAFU B U-17 Boys Championship, scheduled for September this year.

Gusau was accompanied by NFF 2nd Vice President and NPFL Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, as well as NFF Executive Committee members Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, His Excellency Silas Agara, and Ms. Aisha Falode.
