Ondo govt doubles bursary allocation for indigent students

The Ondo State Government has announced a 100 percent increase in bursary allocations for indigent students of state origin studying in recognized institutions across Nigeria, including both public and private schools.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Laolu Akindolire, disclosed this in Akure during a consultative meeting with stakeholders on the 2026 Budget. He described the move as the product of deliberate fiscal planning and resource prioritization by the administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Akindolire said the decision underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive development and human capital investment.

“This bold and strategic decision is coming at a time when many states are grappling with economic strain. It is not just a policy shift; it is a reaffirmation of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of supporting young indigenes as pillars of tomorrow’s economy,” he stated.

He emphasized that the increase reflects the administration’s consistent prioritization of citizens’ welfare.

“At the heart of this decision is a deep understanding of the financial hurdles faced by many students and their families. For some, this bursary is the difference between staying in school or dropping out. Doubling the support, despite budgetary constraints, underscores the government’s prioritization of its youth as critical stakeholders in Ondo State’s future,” Akindolire added.

Despite lean resources, he noted, the state has chosen not to retreat from critical investments. The increment forms part of a broader strategy to empower young people, strengthen education, and build a resilient youth population. Beneficiaries will include thousands of Ondo indigenes enrolled in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other recognized tertiary institutions.

The commissioner also appealed to the private sector, development partners, and philanthropists to complement government efforts in promoting education and youth development.

Speaking on behalf of students, Comrade Ganiyu Yusuf applauded the initiative, noting its direct impact.

“This shows that government is thinking about us. It’s not just about roads and buildings. This bursary is food, books, rent, and peace of mind,” Yusuf said.
