Ondo: Nursing mother slumps, dies while breastfeeding baby

By Boye Oyeyemi –

A wave of shock swept through the Oke Aro area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday after a nursing mother reportedly died while breastfeeding her baby near the popular Dele Bread axis.

Eyewitnesses said the woman, who is a yam seller, had earlier exchanged pleasantries with neighbours before sitting down to nurse her child when the tragic incident occurred.

“She suddenly began to complain of weakness and tiredness. In an attempt to regain her strength, she drank a bottle of Coca-Cola but collapsed and died on the spot,” an eyewitness recounted.

Residents who rushed to the scene expressed sadness over the incident, with some suggesting that the woman’s death might have been linked to malnutrition or poor feeding habits.

She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but medical personnel on duty confirmed that she was brought in dead.

The woman’s husband, a commercial driver, was said to have been informed of the incident but had yet to return home as of the time of filing this report, having left earlier for his daily transport business.

WESTERN POST reports that sympathisers thronged the family’s residence to console the bereaved family, describing the deceased as a peaceful, hard-working, and friendly woman who related well with her neighbours.
