Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has identified competence and loyalty as the main determinants for supporting any candidate in the 2027 gubernatorial election.

The governor disclosed this on Thursday at the 12th Omituntun Annual Ramadan Public Lecture held at Agodi Gate in Ibadan.

Makinde explained that the achievements of his administration were largely driven by loyalty to the interests of Oyo State, stressing that he would only support a candidate that is committed to development, peace and service to the people.

He further warned against a return to political violence, urging residents to continue praying for peaceful governance irrespective of political affiliations.

Highlighting the achievements of his administration, Makinde disclosed that over N25 billion had been paid to clear gratuity arrears owed by previous governments, adding that monthly gratuity payments were increased from N1 billion to N3 billion to ensure that retirees receive their entitlements before his tenure ends in 2027.

The governor also identified the ongoing upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport to international status as another major milestones, stating that preparations were ongoing to enable Hajj pilgrims to be airlifted directly from the facility starting from May 2026.

Makinde appreciated the Muslim community in the state for their prayers and support, noting that the peaceful atmosphere enjoyed in Oyo since 2019 was made possible through cooperation between religious leaders and government, while also affirming that the Ramadan lecture would continue after his tenure to maintain engagement with residents.

To commemorate the event, the governor announced the donation of seven buses to selected mosques across the state to support Islamic activities and also presented a brand new Sport Utility Vehicle to the guest lecturer, Jamiu Ajadi Sanusi, in recognition of his lecture titled “Contentment”.
