opposition parties lack ideas, unity, credible alternatives- Lagos APC

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised opposition parties, accusing them of lacking ideas, unity and credible policy alternatives as Nigeria enters the new year.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, who said the opposition had remained trapped in what he described as a cycle of complaints, excuses and political irrelevance.

Oladejo said rather than engaging in self-reflection or renewal, opposition parties had continued to rely on what he termed exaggerated despair, selective outrage and refusal to accept electoral outcomes, a trend he said does not strengthen democracy.

According to him, a weak opposition driven by bitterness and obstruction, rather than constructive ideas, poses a danger to democratic development, noting that democracy thrives on healthy debate and credible alternatives, not constant grievance.

He urged opposition parties to adopt a more responsible approach in the new year by being honest with Nigerians, accepting democratic processes and refraining from what he described as “international pity-seeking” and negative rhetoric about the country.

The APC spokesman also said opposition figures must learn to distinguish between accountability and persecution, stressing that criminal allegations and court proceedings should not be framed as political witch-hunts.

Oladejo further challenged the opposition to take responsibility for its internal challenges instead of blaming institutions or external forces for its failures, adding that political incompetence could not be corrected by shifting blame.

He also faulted what he described as the opposition’s inconsistent stance on national security issues, urging political actors to condemn terrorism and violence without ethnic or political bias.

Oladejo contrasted the opposition’s approach with what he described as the APC-led Federal Government’s focus on governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, strengthen security and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.

He advised opposition parties to prioritise ideas over insults, policy over propaganda and patriotism over personal vendettas, noting that Nigerians were more interested in leadership that delivers results than in political rhetoric.
