By Kunle Sanni –
The Federal Government has disbursed over ₦20 billion to 4,362 Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) across Northern Nigeria in the last two years, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots healthcare delivery.
The disclosure was made on Thursday by Kamorudeen Yusuf, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, via a post on X (formerly Twitter), quoting Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.
Pate, who spoke at a Government–Citizens Engagement Session organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna, also revealed that 274 projects had been completed in 35 tertiary hospitals across the region. These, he said, have benefited over 4.5 million outpatients and 1.6 million inpatients.
The interventions are part of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), a flagship initiative under the National Health Act of 2014 aimed at improving access to affordable, quality healthcare, especially for the poor and vulnerable.
As of March 2025, Pate disclosed that over ₦45 billion had been disbursed under the BHCPF by November 2024, with an additional ₦32.88 billion approved. More than 7,000 PHCs nationwide have benefited from the fund.
He added that the funds have been used for infrastructure upgrades, procurement of medical supplies, and delivery of essential health services across the country.
The health minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to healthcare reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing the sector as a key pillar of national development.
Pate concluded that the ongoing investments are laying the foundation for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all Nigerians.
