No fewer than 100 commercial drivers and passengers in Ondo State on Wednesday received free medical services during an outreach organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ondo Town.
The exercise, held at the Lagos Park in Oka, Ondo, formed part of activities marking the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme Week. Beneficiaries underwent blood pressure and blood sugar tests, while health counselling was also provided.
The Ondo Town Unit Commander of the FRSC, Assistant Corps Commander Joseph Ajayi, disclosed that the programme was organised in partnership with the Ondo State Specialist Hospital to promote the health of motorists and improve road safety.
He noted that the health of drivers remained a critical factor in preventing road crashes, adding that the command would continue to intensify public enlightenment on safe driving practices.
“The blood pressure tests help to identify hypertension risks, while blood sugar screening is aimed at detecting diabetes and preventing sudden medical emergencies while driving,” Ajayi said.
The unit commander added that the awareness campaign was also designed to educate fleet operators on the objectives of the RTSSS and encourage unregistered operators to enrol in the scheme.
Reacting to their kind gesture, the Chairman of Lagos Park, Oka, Mr Akindolani Koleola, commended the FRSC for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial. He said the programme demonstrated the corps’ commitment to the health and safety of commercial motorists.
Similarly, a passenger, Mrs Omolara Adenuga, also praised the initiative, saying the free medical checks reflected the FRSC’s concern for the welfare of road users and would contribute to safer highways.
