Over 126 million Nigerians now captured in National Identity Database — Tinubu

By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that more than 126 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the National Identity Database, describing the achievement as a milestone in the country’s quest for inclusion, security, and digital empowerment.
Speaking at the 2025 National Day of Identity, organized by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Abuja on Tuesday, the President, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), said the figure reflects more than just numbers.
“This is not just a statistic; it represents 126 million stories of visibility, empowerment, and inclusion. Behind this number are workers who can now claim their pensions without fear of fraud. There are students who can now access loans and scholarships with ease. Farmers receive targeted incentives, while displaced persons and vulnerable groups now have proof of identity that enables them to benefit from humanitarian support,” Tinubu said.
The President highlighted the progress made by NIMC under its Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, including clearing backlogs of enrollments, expanding diaspora registration, introducing mobile enrollment devices, and strengthening security against fraud.
He noted that the Commission has upgraded the national database to accommodate 250 million records, harmonized data with over 125 partner agencies, and enforced the NIN-SIM linkage to improve national security and reduce fraud.
Tinubu stressed that digital identity, backed by Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), is now central to governance, service delivery, and national security. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making the National Identification Number (NIN) the gateway to essential services, from pensions and healthcare to taxation, education, and social investments.
“The NIN is not merely an administrative number. It is the common key that unlocks opportunity, strengthens governance, and builds trust. It is the foundation of our digital transformation and a living example of how identity empowers the Nigerian people,” the President said.
