Oyo begins distribution of mosquito nets to tackle malaria

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Oyo State Government has commenced the distribution of over five million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) across all 33 local government areas, as part of efforts to intensify the fight against malaria.

Speaking during the official flag-off ceremony at the Idi-Ogungun Primary Health Care Centre, Agodi Gate, in Ibadan North Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly pregnant women and children under five.

Dr. Ajetunmobi urged residents to use the nets properly and warned against their misuse for activities such as fishing, gardening, window covering, or commercial displays. She noted that the newly distributed nets are made from lightweight, breathable materials designed for comfort in well-ventilated rooms.

She further cautioned that hoarding or selling the ITNs constitutes a criminal offense and would attract legal sanctions. “These nets are not to be diverted for personal gain. They are life-saving tools provided freely by the government and donor partners to protect public health,” she said.

The Commissioner appealed to mothers and caregivers to cultivate the habit of putting their children to sleep under the nets every night, emphasizing the role of ITNs in preventing illness, reducing hospital visits, and saving lives.

She also disclosed that mop-up exercises would follow the official distribution to ensure comprehensive coverage and that no household is excluded.

The ITN distribution campaign is scheduled to run from August 1 to 7, 2025, and will be conducted through designated fixed-point delivery locations across the state.

To ensure transparency and accountability, electronic tracking systems have been deployed for efficient monitoring throughout the distribution process.
