Oyo govt warns residents over floods, heat wave as rainy season approaches

The Oyo State Government has warned residents to take precautionary measures against possible flash floods, temporary road overflows and heat waves as the 2026 rainy season begins.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said the state could experience flash floods and thunderstorms due to heavy rainfall associated with the onset of the rainy season.
According to him, the ground across many parts of the state remains relatively hard, limiting water absorption and increasing surface runoff on roads, drainages and within some communities.
Although he assured residents that most flooding incidents expected during the period would likely be temporary, Aderinto warned that flooding could become severe and prolonged if waterways and drainage channels cleared by the government are blocked or tampered with.
He also directed residents to desist from illegal dredging and other activities capable of disrupting the natural flow of water. The commissioner noted that stagnant water on roads could damage infrastructure, increase the risk of accidents and threaten public facilities, while reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining proper drainage systems across the state.
On weather conditions, Aderinto disclosed that occasional heatwaves may occur during the transition into the rainy season, with temperatures expected to range between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius.
He advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, remain in cool environments and seek shade whenever necessary.
The statement added that the government would continue monitoring environmental conditions across the state to reduce the impact of extreme weather conditions.
