The contest for the top seat in Agodi Government House has gained a new contender as Dr. Debo Akande, a close aide to Governor Seyi Makinde, hinted at his interest to participate in the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.
Speaking during a live broadcast on Splash FM, Akande expressed confidence in his ability to lead the state, stating, “I have what it takes to become the Governor of Oyo State.”
His comments followed a wide range of speculations over who will succeed Makinde come May 29, 2027.
The governor had earlier suggested that his successor should ideally fall within the 50-year age bracket, a guideline that has sparked debates among younger political actors.
Other potential candidates reportedly under consideration include Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Oyo SUBEB chairman, Bimbo Adekanmbi and Stanley Olajide.
While Akande stopped short of a formal declaration, his remarks have stirred discussions within the Peoples Democratic Party and the broader Oyo political landscape.
“The people of Oyo State will decide if I am qualified for this position,” he added, balancing his current administrative role with his future political aspirations.
