OYRTMA bans officers from wearing mufti during operations

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has directed all officers to wear the officially approved uniform while carrying out enforcement duties across the state.

The directive follows numerous complaints from members of the public about officers engaging in arrests and other enforcement activities while dressed in mufti or unauthorized clothing.

Addressing zonal commanders in Ibadan, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), emphasized that the use of uniforms is essential to upholding professionalism, transparency, and public trust.

“Conducting enforcement in mufti creates confusion, instills fear, and undermines the legitimacy of our operations. It also exposes officers to allegations of impersonation, extortion, and misconduct, which tarnish the image of OYRTMA,” he said.

He declared that henceforth, no officer would be allowed to participate in traffic enforcement without being fully dressed in the complete and officially approved OYRTMA uniform. He also directed zonal and unit commanders to ensure strict compliance across all operational units.

Major Adekoya further warned that any officer who violates the directive would face disciplinary measures in line with existing service regulations.

“The uniform represents authority, accountability, and service to the people. Officers must carry out their duties with civility, respect for citizens’ rights, and in strict compliance with operational guidelines. Our mandate is to ensure safety and order, not to intimidate or harass road users,” he added.

OYRTMA assured the public that the measure is part of ongoing reforms designed to strengthen public confidence through professionalism, transparency, and discipline.
