Wema Bank, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous financial institution, marked its 80th anniversary in grand style with a gala dinner held on Friday, May 2, 2025, in Lagos.
The event, themed “Timeless Elegance,” drew top dignitaries, government officials, captains of industry, and entertainment icons to celebrate the bank’s legacy and achievements over eight decades.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a congratulatory message, lauded Wema Bank for its resilience and contribution to Nigeria’s economic development. The President acknowledged the bank’s role in supporting entrepreneurship, driving financial inclusion, and pioneering innovation in the banking sector through its digital platforms.

The gala dinner featured vibrant performances from Nigerian music stars, including Davido, Wande Coal, 9ice, and Fuji maestro Ayuba. Guests were treated to a night of music, fine dining, and nostalgia as the event paid tribute to the bank’s evolution from its beginnings in 1945 as Agbonmagbe Bank Limited to its current position as a leader in digital banking, with ALAT—Africa’s first fully digital bank.

A highlight of the evening was the symbolic balloon release led by the bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Moruf Oseni. In his address, Oseni expressed appreciation to customers, staff, shareholders, and partners for their unwavering support, noting that Wema Bank’s success story is deeply rooted in trust and innovation.

Oseni emphasized the bank’s transformation over the years—from a single-branch operation to a major player in Nigeria’s banking industry with over 150 branches nationwide and a strong digital footprint. He reiterated Wema Bank’s commitment to continuously delivering value-driven services and contributing to national development.

With an eye on sustainable banking, innovation, and financial empowerment, Wema Bank reaffirmed its pledge to remain a forward-thinking institution dedicated to customer satisfaction and economic impact.
