President Bola Tinubu on Thursday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Nigeria’s armed forces, assuring that their needs would remain a top priority.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bola Tinubu Barracks in Abuja, the President acknowledged the military’s vital role in national security and emphasized his dedication to improving their living conditions and operational capabilities.
“Your welfare cannot, and will not, be compromised,” Tinubu stated. “We will continue to commit resources to improve your welfare. You are our heroes, and what you are doing for this country is remarkable and deeply appreciated. The best way to show our gratitude is through sustained support for the men and women in uniform.”
The President also stressed the importance of maintaining the newly commissioned facilities to ensure their durability. “Continuous development must go hand-in-hand with a strong maintenance culture. It is crucial to sustain the welfare and efficiency of our troops,” he added.
Addressing the Housing Deficit
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, highlighted the acute housing deficit faced by the Nigerian Army, noting that over 40% of personnel still lack adequate accommodation.
“This project being commissioned today comprises only phases one and two of the original plan,” Oluyede stated. “While it is a significant step forward, it remains just a fraction of what is needed to address the housing shortfall.”
The newly inaugurated barracks include 614 housing units designed to accommodate 170 officers and 444 soldiers along with their families.
“The facilities include 16 Major General Quarters, 17 Brigadier General Quarters, 20 housing units for Major to Colonel ranks, 30 units for Lieutenant to Captain ranks, and 60 units for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers,” Oluyede explained. “Additionally, there are 40 units for Corporals and Below. The barracks also feature three worship centers, sports facilities, a powerhouse, and a network of access roads.”
Lt. Gen. Oluyede commended the high standard of the infrastructure, which includes perimeter fencing, entrance gates, groundwater supply systems, and landscaped surroundings, describing the development as a “benchmark of excellence.”
