Report defective skincare product for action, NAFDAC urges Nigerians

The Kwara State Coordinator of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Pharmacist Nathan Nadabo, has urged Nigerians to report any shortcomings or adverse reactions experienced from skincare products to the agency for appropriate action.
Speaking in a phone interview with Western Post on Monday, Nadabo explained that skincare manufacturers are registered under the cosmetics category in NAFDAC, and all necessary evaluations are conducted before their products are certified for public use.
He noted that products making medical claims—whether organic or non-organic—must provide supporting evidence before approval. However, he stressed that cosmetic products affect individuals differently due to varying skin sensitivities.
“The most important thing is for people to report. My concern is that Nigerians rarely report. If people share whatever reactions or unpleasant experiences they have, we can compile the data, gain insight, and take necessary action. But when side effects are ignored, we assume all is well,” Nadabo said.
He assured the public that NAFDAC would protect the identity of anyone lodging complaints and encouraged them to take advantage of the agency’s enlightenment programme, NAFDAC and Your Health.
The coordinator further stated that NAFDAC has the authority to deregister any product found to be causing significant harm to consumers. He emphasised that every complaint would be treated confidentially and with urgency.
Nadabo reiterated that prompt reporting would not only protect individuals but also help safeguard public health, enabling the agency to make informed regulatory decisions.
