Reps facilitate FHIS coverage for 130 journalists

..secure one-year health cover for parliamentary journalists
The House of Representatives has facilitated the enrolment of members of its Press Corps into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS).
The initiative is described as a landmark intervention aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and promoting the welfare of parliamentary correspondents within Nigeria’s parliamentary system.
Under the one-year health insurance package, facilitated by the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, an FHIS identification card was symbolically presented to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps at a ceremony held at the National Assembly Complex. The card was received on behalf of 130 journalists covering the House.
Chairman of the Committee and House Spokesman, Rep. Akintunde Rotimi, credited the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, with fostering a culture of open engagement and supporting the capacity of the Press Corps to effectively perform its constitutional role.
Rotimi noted that the initiative reflects the House’s commitment to the welfare and professional development of journalists, whom he described as critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s democracy.
The FCT Mandate Secretary for Health and Environmental Services, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Baba-Gana Adam, said the gesture aligns with the FHIS “Adopt and Enrol” programme promoting shared responsibility in advancing universal health coverage.
She explained that the programme encourages individuals and organisations to sponsor health insurance premiums for others, describing it as a practical pathway toward achieving Universal Health Coverage and ensuring inclusivity.
Chairman of the Press Corps, Mr. Gboyega Onadiran, and NUJ FCT Council Chairperson, Comrade Grace Ike, commended the initiative as a landmark welfare intervention, as the House reaffirmed its commitment to supporting stakeholders who promote legislative transparency, accountability and public trust.
