Ronaldo vs Messi: Who had the better international career?

For more than two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated world football, broken records and divided opinion among fans, but as their international careers come to an end, the question of who had the better record for his country remains a compelling debate.

Both players have given their countries memorable moments, but their journeys to international success have been different. Ronaldo, who represented Portugal for more than two decades, became the country’s most capped player and all-time leading goalscorer. Messi, meanwhile, became Argentina’s record appearance-maker and leading international goalscorer, eventually guiding his country to the biggest prize in football.

Looking at their numbers, Ronaldo finished with 234 international appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, while Messi recorded 208 appearances and 126 goals for Argentina. The Portuguese forward therefore has the advantage in both appearances and goals, reflecting his remarkable longevity at the highest level. Messi, however, contributed more assists, with 70 compared with Ronaldo’s 37, highlighting another important aspect of his influence on the pitch.

When it comes to international trophies, both players have reasons to be proud. Ronaldo captained Portugal to its first European Championship title in 2016, before adding the UEFA Nations League trophy in 2019 and 2025. Messi’s international honours include the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, the 2022 Finalissima and, most significantly, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Argentina defeated France in the final after a penalty shoot-out.

The World Cup remains one of the biggest talking points in the comparison. Messi scored seven goals during Argentina’s successful 2022 campaign, won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player and became a world champion after years of disappointment with his national team. Ronaldo, on the other hand, made history by scoring at six different editions of the men’s World Cup, from 2006 to 2026, although he never lifted the trophy. Messi also has the advantage in total World Cup goals, with 13 against Ronaldo’s eight.

At continental level, the two forwards also established impressive records. Messi scored 14 goals in the Copa América, while Ronaldo registered 14 goals at the European Championship, making them the leading goalscorers in their respective competitions.

Their achievements were not without setbacks, however. Messi endured several painful defeats in major finals, including the 2014 World Cup and three Copa América finals, before finally ending Argentina’s trophy drought at the 2021 tournament. Ronaldo also experienced disappointment with Portugal before leading the country to its historic European Championship triumph in 2016, despite being forced off with an injury during the final against France.

Beyond the statistics, their international careers have been defined by different strengths. Ronaldo’s record reflects consistency, physical longevity and an extraordinary ability to find the net for Portugal across different generations of players. Messi’s career, meanwhile, combines goalscoring with playmaking, individual brilliance and a collection of major international honours that includes football’s most coveted trophy. Both also played important roles in transforming the global standing of their national teams.

So, who was better? The numbers do not produce an entirely straightforward answer. Ronaldo finished with more international goals and appearances, while Messi won more major senior international trophies, including the World Cup, and recorded more assists. Those who place greater importance on goalscoring and longevity may favour Ronaldo’s record, while those who prioritise the World Cup and overall international honours will point to Messi’s achievements. What is beyond dispute, however, is that both players have left an extraordinary mark on international football, and their rivalry will remain one of the defining stories of the modern game.
