Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has announced a ₦50,000 special payment for all workers in Lagos State as part of measures to cushion the impact of the recent fuel price increase.
The governor said the one-off payment for May 2026 is intended to provide immediate financial relief to workers facing rising transport costs and increased living expenses following the latest adjustment in fuel prices across the country.
He explained that the payment would be made uniformly to all categories of workers, regardless of rank or grade level, noting that the decision was taken to ensure fairness and broad-based support during a period of economic pressure.
Sanwo-Olu made the announcement during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, where he was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.
At the event, themed “Insecurity, Poverty Bane of Decent Work,” the governor acknowledged the economic challenges confronting workers and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving welfare and boosting productivity across the state.
He noted that the ₦50,000 payment forms part of broader interventions aimed at supporting workers and maintaining economic stability, adding that the welfare of workers remains central to the growth and resilience of Lagos.
Furthermore, Sanwo-Olu indicated that the arrangement could be reviewed depending on prevailing economic conditions and government capacity, suggesting that additional measures may be introduced as needed.
In addition, the governor stressed the importance of security to workers’ wellbeing, noting that ongoing investments in community policing, surveillance systems, and collaboration with federal security agencies are designed to ensure a safe environment for productivity, while also assuring that his administration remains focused on completing all ongoing projects before the end of its tenure.
