Sanwo-Olu inaugurates committee for maiden 2026 national intermediate games

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the maiden edition of the 2026 National Intermediate Games (NIG), charging members to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, professionalism and a strong sense of purpose.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Marina, the governor described the assignment as a critical step toward advancing sports development and nurturing young talents across the country.
Sanwo-Olu said the National Intermediate Games would serve as a platform for young athletes from different parts of Nigeria to discover, develop and showcase their abilities while creating opportunities for excellence in sports.
According to him, Lagos State’s decision to host the competition in October 2026 underscores its commitment to youth empowerment, talent development and the promotion of sports as a tool for social and economic growth.
The governor noted that beyond competition, the games would promote national unity, social inclusion and cultural exchange by bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds across the federation.
He described the event as an investment in the future of Nigerian youths, stressing that sports remain a powerful avenue for creating opportunities, building character and strengthening national integration.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development and Co-Chairman of the LOC, Mobolaji Ogunlende, expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in the team and pledged to deliver a successful tournament.
Earlier, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, who led members of the committee on a courtesy visit to the governor, commended Lagos State for its sustained investment in sports infrastructure and youth development. He expressed confidence in the state’s capacity to successfully host the maiden games, which are expected to provide a pathway for talent identification, athlete development and national sports growth.
