Senior lawyer repays student loan to NELFUND 49 years later

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Asiwaju Adegboyega Solomon Awomolo has made a repayment of N2 million, settling a student loan he received nearly five decades ago under the defunct Federal Government Student Loan Scheme.
In a statement issued by Monalisa Dike, spokesperson for the Director of Corporate Communications at NELFUND, it was revealed that Awomolo had originally benefited from a N1,000 loan during his undergraduate studies at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) during the 1975/1976 and 1976/1977 academic sessions.
This repayment follows closely on the heels of a similar gesture by former House of Representatives member Lanre Laoshe, who recently repaid his student loan to the federal government.
Despite several attempts over the years, Awomolo was unable to complete the repayment until now, 49 years later. In a letter dated September 4, 2024, and addressed to the Managing Director/CEO of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, Awomolo expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian government.
He credited the loan for enabling him to complete his law degree without financial strain and emphasized his commitment to repaying the nation that supported his education.
“The loan was instrumental in helping me complete my law degree,” Awomolo stated. “I am grateful for the opportunity the student loan provided, and I am pleased to fulfill this commitment.”
NELFUND praised Awomolo’s repayment as a testament to his integrity and dedication, highlighting the importance of educational support for future generations.
