Sowore returns to Nigeria ahead of 2027 presidential election
Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday, expressing excitement about returning to his family and the country after more than 20 months away.
According to him, he left Nigeria for the United States following what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.
Sowore said that while in the US, he engaged Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on the state of the country and his political agenda. He also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.
The AAC candidate said he remained committed to the participation of Nigerians in the diaspora in the country’s democratic process, adding that an AAC administration would pursue diaspora voting if elected president in 2027.
Sowore said he was expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, before proceeding to Abuja, where he would continue attending court proceedings over a cybercrime case instituted against him by the Department of State Services in 2025.
He said his return marked another phase of his nationwide campaign, with plans to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities on the political, social and economic issues contained in the AAC’s 2027 agenda.
“My campaign will continue to advocate fundamental political, social and economic transformation. I will continue the campaign and engagements with Nigerians as the 2027 election approaches,” Sowore said.
