Tension in Ilesa as gunmen attack APC supporters, two feared dead

Tension gripped Ilesa, Osun State, on Tuesday following an early morning attack on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had gathered ahead of the party’s final rally in the town.

Four APC supporters were reportedly shot during the incident, with two of the victims said to have died, while the other two were receiving treatment in critical condition.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the Igbogi area of Ilesa, where party members were converging for the rally scheduled to commence at 8 a.m.

A source in the area, identified as Sola, said the attackers, armed with pump-action rifles, stormed the gathering and opened fire.

According to him, party members had been directed by their leaders to assemble at Igbogi ahead of the rally when the attackers arrived.

He said, “We were preparing for our final rally today, and our leaders said we should converge at Igbogi for take-off, which was scheduled for 8 a.m. At 7:30 a.m., the thugs stormed the venue and started shooting sporadically, leaving four people injured. It is so unfortunate. This is coming barely three days after Amotekun shot some members”.

Confirming the attack, the Media Head of the APC Campaign Council, Oluremi Omowaiye, said four supporters were shot, adding that two of the victims had died while the other two were in critical condition.

Omowaiye added that the party’s woman leader in Ilesa was among those injured and was receiving treatment at Wesley Guild Hospital.
