Timipre Sylva resigns from APC, cites departure from founding ideals

Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect.

Sylva announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The former governor, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and supporters.

“Having consulted widely with my family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers, I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress, APC, with immediate effect,” Sylva said in the letter.

He accused the party of abandoning the ideals upon which it was founded, expressing dissatisfaction with the direction of the APC under its current leadership.

Sylva also criticised the party’s approach to politics, alleging that its actions had contributed to the erosion of basic standards of decency and morality in political affairs.

The former governor’s resignation comes amid renewed political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several politicians and political groups repositioning themselves across the country.

Sylva, who served as Bayelsa governor from 2007 to 2012, was also Minister of State for Petroleum Resources under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
